Lake Winnipeg Cottage Country Activities

There is an activity for everyone in the East Beaches area on the shores of Lake Winnipeg.  As a Hillside Heights cottage resident you are well located to indulge in whatever your fancy.  Here are some of the more popular choices…

Golf.  Grand Pines Golf Course is a championship 18 hole layout situated just 5 minutes south from Hillside Heights on Hwy. 59.  All the holes  on the course meander through the beautiful boreal forest. Water comes in to play on 1/2 of the holes and most greens are protected by well placed bunkers. There is an active Men’s and Women’s league where friendly competition takes place.

Tennis/ Pickleball Manitoba’s largest tennis community is a short 5 minutes north at Victoria Beach.  6 beautiful hard surface courts are busy from May to October.  There is round robin play 3 times per week and many other mixer activities and clinics.  Manitoba’s biggest tennis tournament takes place every August long weekend. Pickleball is played throughout the spring, summer and fall indoors at the Victoria Beach Sports Club

Biking/Hiking.  There are many trails throughout the area for all levels of biking and hiking enthusiasts. Grand Beach forest and the cliffs of Sandy Bay are a popular area with a variety of trails and elevation changes.  The  North entrance to Grand Beach park is located 10 minutes from Hillside Heights.

Entertainment/Nightlife. You’d be surprised at the nightlife factor at the Eastern Beaches.  The Birchwood Hotel (5 minutes from Hillside Heights) will book live entertainment often with great Canadian artists participating.  The Sandbar Hotel in Grand Beach (15 minutes from Hillside Heights) is often a spot where you will find entertainment on the patio during a summer weekend.  The Summer Winds Music Festival held in July at Victoria Beach is a weekend long festival featuring some of the biggest Canadian acts.

Fishing. Lake Winnipeg has long been a fertile producer of a variety of fish including pickerel.  Pine Falls (25 minutes from Hillside Heights) boasts of world class pickerel fishing.  Marinas are close by Hillside Heights to launch your fishing boat. Ice fishing is very popular in the area

Water Sports. You will see kayaks, windsurfers, boaters, sailing, kiters, paddle-boarding and canoeing on any beach on the southern basin of Lake Winnipeg during the summer months. The gentle sloped beaches of Hillside are perfect for children wanting to enjoy splashing in the surf!

Bird/Wildlife Watching.  There are many dozen varieties of birds to watch and document in the area. The variety of habitat in the area allows many species to flourish.

Winter Sports.  Hillside Heights is a year round community.  Snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing are popular winter time activities.  Many trails are marked and groomed for your safety and enjoyment. Curling is also popular at the Victoria Beach Sports Club.

Social. One of the most active seniors facilities in Manitoba is located in Victoria Beach and it is called the Social Scene.  They enjoy a tremendous social side to activities and regularly get together for bridge, bingo, dinners, yoga and other fun events.
